Using the lengths of the walls that make up the corners in the fishbowl Room in London College Of Communication I created triangles.

I divided the lengths by 10 creating smaller dimensions that can be easily compared with one another. The final length of the triangles has be created by joining up the existing wall two lengths.

This book reveals the lengths of walls that make up the corners in the Fishbowl Room in London College Of Communication.

The System: Each page has a set grid to where the two measurements must be placed. The lengths of the measurements expressed are as large length it reads.

I adapted the book by placing photographic images of each corner behind the lengths.

The lines in this book expresses dimensions of the walls in the Fishbowl Room in London College Of Communication. Each diagram reveals a vertical line which is the height of the wall. The other two lines reveal the two lengths of wall that make up the corners. All lengths have been divided by ten to create dimensions that appear can be easily related to, as well allowing them to be comparable with one another.

I created a book to visually reveal the corners in the Fishbowl Room in London College Of Communication. The corners that point out wards, pop out of the book and the corners that go in, pop into the book. The corners are expressed photographically as well as their lengths written numerically.

The three poster series acts as one ultimate poster. It relays information about the conference in sections. In producing the posters I was required to highlight when the event was, emphasising the time and date. This is revealed in the large type. The poster was produced using only a photocopier. Extracts were taken from the the given text and resized.

Generative Systems: Colour & Light

System:

I selected numbers on a lottery ticket using the lucky dip option. I then used these numbers to express colour and light. I chose to count the colours around the colour wheel going clock wise as many times as was required.

The pages below reveal the colours my numbers fell on, where the larger circle reveals the final colour I landed on. I adjusted the opacity of the colours to reveal the amount of times I had to count around the wheel. The lighter the colour, the smaller the number, the darker the colour the more larger the number.

System: Chance
I span a pencil in the centre of the colour wheel the amount of times my numbers required me to. the final colour revealed is the last colour the pencil pointed to. The specific numbers are reflected in the size of circle.

System: Progression
I used teh data I collected from my chance experiment. This time I noted down every colour teh pencil pointed to, I have listed the colour progressivley.

Generative Systems Workshop

I produced a set of compositions using black paper tiles on a set 7 by 7 grids. The amount of tiles used was taken from the randomly selected numbers I had chosen previously for a lottery ticket.

For each number I produced seperate pieces using four different systems. The systems I used to create the pieces above, from left to right were:

Chance
Progression
Collaboration

The grids within the group were later compiled together in two larger pieces. One contained all the high numbers, and the second contained all the low numbers.

The Empty Shop Project

In conjunction with a theatre production called Exposure I was part of creating an installation in an empty shop in Derby. The installation was inspired by the scripts used in Exposure.

There was also a collaborative piece that involved participants to help write a sentence each to make up a story. The story ran across stepping stone shaped paper that lead up to a wendy house.

I put on an Artists' Book workshop in Solihull Art Gallery. The pages of the book consisted of photographs I had systematically captured that documented a walk around the building itself. I used a simple framing method when photographing my images. And demonstrated simple folds and binding techniques that would be needed to make the book a finished piece.

Solihull Gallery fold up

I have been commissioned by the Solihull Gallery to design a fold up card that mirrors the style of the 'Systematic Journey Books' I have produced. These cards will be used as promotional material at the gallery and also distributed nationally to other galleries.

The idea is to promote the Artists' Book exhibition that will run from March to May 2010 by distributing a card that could be folded into an Artists' Book. Another aspect of the brief was to raise awareness of Solihull Gallery, I did this by generating a systematic approach that would document the building itself. I recorded my walk around Solihull Art Gallery/Library by taking a photograph after every 20 paces, looking up. The selection of images are totally unpredictable and depict Solihull Gallery from my own view point.

I will be exhibiting my Systematic Journey Books for the duration of the exhibition.

Selling work at the Solihull Book Fair on 20th March as well as a short demonstration on a folded book technique.

My workshop will run on the 6th May. It will consist of paper folding to create books that can open out based upon the idea that an object can become art through its individual form.

5 Minute Systematic Journey Book

I created this book to express a journey that I took around Birmingham. I systematically recorded the journey by taking a photograph of my surroundings at 5 minutes intervals. The camera was angled upwards towards the sky, as this was my perspective throughout my journey. The book folds out to give the viewer a sense that they are entering into a different place and going on the same journey that I went on. This book has been selected for both the Tate Britain archive and the Regional College of Art archive. I have also used the same system and form to create a book based upon a journey in Edinburgh and I have sold copies of both books at various specialised artists’ books fairs.

The idea behind this was to make the book more life size making the viewer feel as if they were actually at the places I photographed along my journey, also inviting them to interact with the piece as it obstructs their personal space.

Taking the ideas around my previous 5 Minute Systematic Book further, I chose to go on the same journey but document it in a different way. Rather than looking up, this time I took photographs looking forwards, backwards and to the left and right of me whilst standing in the same positions as I did to take my previous books’ images. I also made my own fish-eyed lens for the digital camera, which created three circular areas to express my surroundings. The fish-eyed lens effect creates the idea whereby it looks as though you are peeking out at the world that I was in.

20 Step Cathedral Book

Birmingham Cathedral is located in the centre of Birmingham. It is a beautiful structural form, which is so large that it is difficult to appreciate it all in one go. To communicate this idea I took a photograph looking upwards every 20 steps whilst walking around the Cathedral. When expressing the images in the book I included those which emphasised the idea of looking right and the left, leaving blank what was in the middle, inviting the viewer to put the pieces together and visualise what I saw.

Birmingham Cathedral is located in the centre of Birmingham. It is a beautiful structural form, which is so large that it is difficult to appreciate it all in one go. The folds are reminiscent of a steeple or spire of a cathedral or church. The book appears to tower up in its shape just as a building does.

London Underground Tube Stop Books

These sets of accordion books were made around the idea of using the window of an underground train as a frame in which a composition could be placed. I used every stop as the system whereby I took a photograph of whatever appeared through the window frame at each stop. The images created were unpredictable and express my short tube journey. The images were random selections of billboards on the London underground, recreating an existing piece of design into a new design.I created a set of 5 books whereby I traveled across zone 1 along 5 different lines that I happened to use on a particular journey in London. The lines I used were the Northern Line, Central Line, Bakerloo Line, Victoria Line and Jubilee Line. I timed how long it took to get from each stop to the next, keeping the information within the book factual to put emphasis on my systematic approach, which adds interest to the unpredictable nature of the imagery that is formed as the outcome.

Newsprint Horizon Book

I went on a short walk and took photographs of the point at which the tops of buildings touched the sky every 3 minutes. This book expresses my quick journey, producing images that are totally unpredictable. I made this book from newsprint paper to represent the ‘grimeyness’ of the buildings and city around me, which adds to the experience of viewing this book.

I screen printed the negative spaces formed within the images from the Newsprint Horizon Book, putting emphasis on the hand-made qualities it creates, making the sky and details appear black and the buildings appear white. I wanted to express the same systematic journey in another form that was an abstract representation.

Using the images of the horizons that I used as the documentation of my walk in the Newsprint Horizon Book, I created a new city sky line by piecing the separate horizons together which had formerly been 3 minutes walking distance apart in my systematic recording. In creating a new skyline I have constructed a new place that does not exist.

This book was created whilst I was organising an event based upon the theme of ‘Creatures’. The event included an exhibition room where I displayed this Creature Book. The images created worked to a system whereby I took a 15 minute walk on a sunny day with a friend. We stopped at every shadow we came across on our journey and I photographed the image of my friends shadow merging with the existing shadow on the ground. This system transformed the shadows into creature-like forms. The large-scale sizing of this book adds to the sinister nature of the images, as they appear larger and life-like.

This set of 8 books conveys a walk I went on to Birmingham Cathedral. I photographed every signpost I passed along the way and in addition to this I angled my camera in the direction of each arrow on each particular signpost, expressing the space around me. I came across 7 signposts on the way. The last book folds out to reveal a full image of Birmingham Cathedral, which was my final destination.

Double Exposure Building Book

I systematically recorded buildings along my walk with my fish-eyed lens film camera, double exposing the images to create surreal images. The photographs produced appear mirror imaged. Putting emphasis on the angles of the architecture around me also on how surreal the experience can be. Areas of negative space have been cut out so when the book is opened out in daylight, these areas such as the windows appear to glow.

For an idea for my next piece i created a long trail of 'O's along the span of a till roll, to express some sort of snails trail or the idea of a long caterpillar also sprang to mind. I wanted to stretch this composition across and area that would mimic the kind of place that the creature may live in.... I set up my work in some near by woods. I then went along my piece and photographed it every two steps to see where areas of my composition landed, it may've been amongst plants, water and leaves.

This book I created is more of a collection of pieces. Its a systematic record of when I walked down a road in Digbeth in birmingham. It is a place where there is a lot of urban art work pasted on the walls. I cam about this idea when walking there one morning. The system I set in place was to tear as much of the every poster I could in one tear, This was done from one corner downwards until the paper ripped off. This would form the documentation of my journey through Digbeth. Instead of binding the artwork in a structured form I felt a neatly folded collection would be better, binding it with a piece of rope. This allows the viewer to open out the pages and rummage around, letting the pieces be freer in the same way I saw them on my journey.

This book expresses this quick journey. i made this book from cheap newsprint paper to express the 'grimeyness' of the buildings and city around me. These watercolour and ink fold out books express a city scape. They fold open to reveal my illustration form page to page. There is constant line that flows from each building expressing a telephone wire, where finally the line ends up at a phone box at the end.

Systematic Underground Tube book

This accordion book was made around the idea of using the tube window as a frame. So from Angel and Elephant and Castle I used the stops in between as the system where by I took pictures out of the same window of what ever appeared at each stop. The images created are totally random and couldn't have been predicted. They were random selections of bill boards on the London underground.

I put on a work shop with year 4 children from Graiseley Primary School. Overall the workshop was successful and the children were fun to work with as they seemed very interested in my ideas and approach within illustration. I showed them my books and folding techniques as well as my Ink illustration technique which they seemed to love! We created three piece creature drawings which then combined with the rest of the groups would create a book with interchanging body parts. The concept appeared exciting to the children, and we are all eagerly awaiting the finished result in a book form that will be sold a book fairs and to the school.

I made up a book of double exposures I took. I took images of a journey I had been on. Where by one set of exposures express looking up at the sky and the second set I took images of objects I saw along my journey. I created one book with black and white images and a second with colour. I feel the colour express's the journey a lot better as the true colours can be identified. When the images are all jumbled up areas can be seen, and almost appear like slight memories that can be remembered. This book expresses my personal journey.

Unpredictably and randomness within systems has always fascinated me, and it is something i work with in much of my design work.

I feel the double exposes would give me the unpredictable images I wanted to generate and is something I enjoy experimenting in. I started off by using a simple system, I chose to take all pictures around the idea of ‘communication'. I wanted this to be a collaborative piece... The first set of images were took in Birmingham, and then the film was sent to london where the second set was taken by somebody else.

By simply soaking water colour paper into different colour watercolour paints and folding it up in such a way I wanted to create a book that because of its binding created pages full of visually exciting colour. the parameters of each page creates composition in that small area.

I went about replicating Daniel Eatocks ‘Pantone Pen Print’ by doing so I put a system together which was simple. This was putting a set of felt tip pens on a stack of paper and leaving them for a week. Although the outcome could have been imagined, I liked the element of not knowing exactly what the outcome and forms would be. There is a sense of excitement leading up to revealing the finished piece before lifting up the pens.

It was kind of tricky to bind such a vast amount of separate sheets of paper. I tried using a technique where you create slits all the way down the spine, and fill them in glue and small pieces of book binding thread, and after covered it with scrim to make it a little more secured. I found the Japanese book binding technique worked a lot better for holding the pages together.

Newspaper Books

For this set of three books I had been inspired by the newspaper book Chris Svensson had made. I liked the idea where a newspaper that had been designed by somebody else could be switched around but still have the same subject matter within it.

I set a system whereby I asked three people to close their eyes and place a book upon a newspaper each. Each newspaper was exactly the same. I then Drew around the book that each individual had placed, then cut out the area that had been selected. For each separate newspaper I placed all the pages into a bag and then let the individual pick out each page at random, placing them all on top of one another and then bound them via the Japanese stitch binding. These books are selected areas of the same literature, and the fact that each appears totally different emphasizes how unpredictable this process can result in.
